Objective

The objective was to identify the barriers to adoption of EVs in the 3-wheeler segment and requirements of different stakeholders across end users, dealers, financiers, and mechanics and translate these insights into product, pricing, service, financing, and market-entry recommendations. The research examined both customer requirements and ecosystem constraints affecting EV adoption.

Business Challenge

The adoption of EVs was limited by battery reliability, charging infrastructure, service availability, financing costs, resale values, and limited technical support across the ecosystem. Dealers and mechanics faced diagnostic, spare-parts, and technical-support challenges, at the same time, drivers faced direct income implications from downtime.

How We Did It

A multi-stakeholder research program was conducted covering end users, dealers, financiers and mechanics. The study included End User In-Depth Interviews, stakeholder interviews and Conjoint Analysis. 6WSurveyIQ/Kobo was used for structured research capture, SQL was used to maintain stakeholder and respondent databases, and Python was used for conjoint modelling, customer segmentation, pricing analysis and preference modelling.

Key Findings

• Service-network presence was a major purchase driver.• Battery/range and charging were major concerns.• Financing constraints affected adoption.• Warranty and lifecycle assurance influenced customer confidence.• ₹3.8 lakh emerged as an important conjoint price point.• Spare-parts availability and technical support affected dealer and mechanic confidence.• Resale-value concerns reduced long-term purchase attractiveness.

Findings

EV adoption was identified as an ecosystem challenge rather than only a product challenge. Vehicle performance, charging, service, financing, warranty and resale value had to be addressed together to improve adoption. Service accessibility and faster response times were particularly important because vehicle downtime directly affected driver earnings and business viability.

Business Impact

Based on the conjoint analysis, the preferred price level was at Rs. 3.8 lakh, and the key considerations for buying were the services covered, range of batteries, and warranty. This information helped in formulating optimum pricing, product specification, warranty, financing tie-ups, and service networks. Localized service support, mobile service, faster response mechanisms and stronger battery assurance were recommendations that fortified the foundation for EV product launch, adoption growth and market-share expansion.
