Mumbai power demand & supply and transmission capacity market report thoroughly covers the market by power demand, consumption, supply, and transmission capacity of existing transmission lines. Mumbai’s power demand & supply and transmission capacity analysis market outlook report provides an unbiased and detailed analysis of the ongoing trends in power consumption, opportunities/high growth sectors, and exiting and upcoming power projects, which would help the stakeholders to devise and align their market strategies according to the current and future market dynamics.
Maharashtra State Power Generation Company Ltd. (Mahagenco) supplies electricity to Maharashtra including Mumbai and is the second-largest power producing company in India with a total generation of about 14,400 MW. Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) is both the largest consumer as well as a generator of power. Mumbai’s power demand in summer reaches up to 3,400-3,600 MW and drops to about 2,400 MW during winters. Power demand declined amid COVID-19 as major manufacturing and industrial operations were halted and malls, the hospitality sector, automobile units, and small businesses were also completely shut down. However, the demand increased substantially by 53% for the whole of Maharashtra including Mumbai as the industries and offices resumed their usual activities.

According to 6Wresearch, the Mumbai power demand and supply market is projected to grow at a CAGR of 9.7% and transmission capacity to grow at a CAGR of 11.5% during 2021-2028. This anticipated growth in power demand will be due to increasing Mumbai’s population, considering the fact that it is the 9th largest city by population in the world. Furthermore, upcoming real estate and housing projects such as the construction of ultra-luxury skyscrapers by Marathon group and the development of residential society by Suntek Realty in the Mumbai metropolitan region would result in an increase in power demand from these residential sectors. Mumbai, being India's commercial center, has been the country's largest hospitality market, and a surge in luxury projects is predicted to result in a 50% increase in branded hotel room inventory over the next 4-5 years in Mumbai which would thereby be generating more power demand. The transmission capacity is projected to grow during the forecasted period owing to the government initiatives for expansion of transmission lines to manage the inadequacy of transmission networks that are likely to hamper the grid of the Mumbai metropolitan region as the city’s power units account for only 50% of its peak demand. Additionally, the power consumption of Mumbai and its suburbs is expected to rise up to 5,000 MW by 2024-2025 thus, the state is planning to increase the power generation by another 1,000 MW in addition to the existing generation of 1,877 MW. The government also aims to lay a network of efficient transmission lines that would enable the import of power from outside projects and the national grid.
Mumbai’s power demand is expected to increase in the coming years owing to growing demand from residential sectors due to increasing population growth and upcoming real estate and luxury housing projects. Additionally, the gradual entry of MNCs and IT parks have resulted in rising demand for hotels especially in the business districts of Mumbai like Bandra Kurla Complex in North-Mumbai has significantly contributed towards an increase in power demand.
Mumbai’s transmission capacity is expected to increase during the forecasted period as the government is strengthening its transmission network to meet the rising power demand of the city. Additionally, the government initiatives including change of the conductors of Kalwa-Padghe circuits will increase the transmission capacity up to 2,000 MW and increase power generation to 8,000 MW by Uran state plant and completion of Khargar-Vikhroli substation by 2024 will help in expansion of transmission capacity.
