Nepal is one of the fastest-growing pulp markets in South Asia. The country's annual demand for paper and paperboard products has been growing steadily since the early 2000s, driven by a rapidly expanding population and rising incomes. In 2020, Nepal's market size for paper and paperboard is estimated to be over $200 million.
The Nepalese government has implemented several policies to promote domestic production and consumption of pulp products. These include tax incentives for producers, subsidies on raw materials, import tariffs on foreign imports, preferential loans to local manufacturers, and more recently a ban on plastic packaging related items with polymers content above 30%. This policy shift towards promoting sustainable production methods should help increase the competitiveness of Nepalese companies competing against foreign suppliers in both export markets as well as the domestic market place.
