Increasing penetration of smart devices such as smartphones and tablets, growing demand for digital content and rising DSLR cameras market have fueled the growth of India Consumer Flash Memory Storage devices.
According to 6Wresearch, India Consumer Flash Memory Storage market (Pen Drive, Micro SD and SD cards) shipments registered 27.9 million units during CY 3Q 2014. The market experienced a decline of around 8% over CY 2Q 2014. SanDisk endured its market leadership in all the three segments followed by Samsung and Transcend. In the current quarter, Samsung registered a substantial growth of around 90% and overtook Transcend as compared to the previous quarter.

“Shift in demand towards higher capacity Consumer Flash Memory Storage devices can be witnessed in the India market. The consumers are shifting towards 8GB SKU from 4GB in last few quarters. Built in memory limitation and declining prices would further boost the market growth for higher capacity flash storage devices”, stated Anuj Mehrotra (Research Analyst, 6Wresearch India Electronics Division.
During CY 3Q 2014, the ownership cost of 8GB Consumer Flash Memory Storage devices has experienced a continuous declining trend. For instance, the average prices of 4GB and 16GB capacity devices have experienced a decrease of more than 45% and 5%, respectively as compared to the previous quarter.
In the Pen Drive Storage segment, 8GB storage capacity holds lion share of the market, although 16GB Pen Drives observed significant growth of around 12% over the previous quarter. Further, the market is expected to reach new heights in the coming quarter primarily due to declining ownership cost of devices.
