Huawei, ZTE captured 87% market share of India's 4G data card market in Q1

NEW DELHI: Chinese telecom gear maker ZTE topped the 4G data card market during the first quarter of the calendar year 2015, followed by another Chinese player Huawei, According to 6Wresearch, which also claims that Huawei and ZTE together captured around 87% market share during the quarter.

In the chipset segment, Qualcomm registered lion share of the market, the study said.

India's 4G data card market shipments value reached $3.5 million for the first quarter of the calendar year 2015. The market registered a substantial triple-digit growth of around 179% in the first quarter of 2015 over the same quarter the previous year, the study claimed.

The firm said that rising demand for internet connectivity coupled with a reduction in telecom tariffs has spurred the market for the 4G data card devices in India. Additionally, the provision of LTE based data cards, primarily due to the recent implementation of 4G services in the country has further boosted India's 4G data card market.

"In the India data card market, 4G data cards experienced an abrupt rise in demand among the Indian consumers. Over the coming quarters, the India 4G Data Card market is expected to demonstrate tremendous growth opportunities due to the declining ownership cost and rising consumer awareness," Anuj Mehrotra, Research Analyst, 6Wresearch-India Electronics Division, said.

Continuous technological advancements and increasing need for high-speed wireless connectivity are expected to drive the India data card market, the firm said, adding that mobile hotspot will remain the major hindrance in the growth of India 4G data card Market. 

"Over a period of time, wireless connectivity has become an indispensable part of the lives of the Indian consumers and especially amongst the youth. India Data Card market which was previously commanded by 3G/2G devices is now experiencing a paradigm shift towards the 4G/LTE data card devices," Mehrotra added.
