Mega projects worth US$27bn attracting global construction players in East Africa

The second edition of The Big 5 Construct East Africa, which will take place at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre in Nairobi, on 1 - 3 November 2017, is expected to exceed a successful launch event

The Big 5 Construct East Africa 2016 welcomed over 8,500 participants, hosting 188 companies from 21 countries, and 144 key buyers who directly influence the purchasing of products and services for projects valued at over US$50mn. The event, co-located with the National Construction Authority's Annual Construction Research Conference, also offered 24 hours of networking and 17 certified workshops attended by almost 4,500 industry professionals.

In its second edition, The Big 5 Construct East Africa 2017 is expected to grow even bigger, expanding across 5 exhibition halls and hosting over 200 local and international exhibitors. "With East Africa being the fastest-growing region in the continent, the event is setting itself as the central meeting place for global manufacturers of construction products to network and do business," Andy Pert, Exhibition Portfolio Director, said.

There are 43 mega projects currently going on in the region, with a total value of US$27.4bn. According to the latest 6Wresearch commissioned by The Big 5 Construct East Africa, 4 of the top 10 projects in East Africa are taking place in Kenya.

The biggest of these projects, Kenya's Konza Smart City, is worth US$14.9bn and is expected to be completed by 2030. The city will include the development of a central business district, a university campus, a residential community and parks over 5,000 acres of land.

The US$3.8bn worth Mombasa-Nairobi Railway project, the second-highest value project, is developing a 609 km long single-track standard-gauge railway between Mombasa and Nairobi. Designed to handle trains with a capacity of around 1,000 passengers with an average speed of 12 km/hr, the railway is expected to be completed by December 2017, also connecting the areas of Kilifi, Kwale, Taita-Taveta, Makueni, Kajiado, and Machakos.

Organized by dmg events in the Middle East, Asia & Africa, The Big 5 Construct East Africa will provide new upgraded features this year. Beyond a dedicated VIP program for Government officials and key buyers, the show will host a brand new pre-arranged meeting program for exhibitors and pre-registered visitors.
