Indonesia is one of the largest producers and exporters of fresh onions and shallots in the world. Onions are mostly grown in East Java, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), Central Java, and Lampung while shallots are mainly cultivated in East Java, Central Java, Banten, and West Nusa Tenggara. In 2020 Indonesia exported a total of 2.5 million tonnes (MT) of onion or shallot products to countries such as India, Malaysia, Thailand, Bangladesh and Vietnam worth USD 627 million with China being the biggest export destination accounting for 28% exports by volume. The country produced 3 MT of onions annually with production centered around East Java province followed by Central Java province which accounts for 25-30% share on national production level respectively. Shallot production accounted for an estimated 0.2 MT yearly with supply coming from regions like East ¢ral java provinces which account for 60-65% share on national production level respectively.
In recent years due to increasing demand both domestically as well as internationally there has been a spike in investments made into this sector such that farmers have upgraded their farms from conventional farming techniques to modern practices like application of fertilizers , irrigation systems etc resulting in increased yields per acreage. There has also been a strong trend towards organic cultivation among smallholder farmers primarily those cultivating shallots in order to meet stringent quality requirements set forth by importing countries. This shift towards organic production coupled with rising consumer awareness about food safety drove new investment inflows into this segment as well thus driving up prices further.
The primary driver behind Indonesia success story when it comes down its onion /shallot industry lies within its fertile soils having high nutrient content conducive enough for successful cultivation along side favorable tropical climate conditions enabling prolonged growing seasons through out year round leading up robust harvests every seasonally cycle. Another major driver behind this success is presence huge domestic markets providing steady source income helping maintain price stability locally alongside foreign markets offering lucrative opportunities allowing Indonesia produce enter other international markets thereby creating large export revenues adding further impetus growth witnessed across industries related it.
The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on the Indonesia onion and shallot market. The outbreak of the virus caused major disruptions in the supply chain, leading to an increase in prices and reduced availability of onions and shallots. This was due to restrictions placed on transportation, as well as trade between countries, which limited imports from traditional sources such as China and India.
One of the biggest challenges facing the market is a lack of infrastructure for storage or processing facilities. Onions are highly perishable goods that require proper refrigeration during transport to remain fresh until sale. Additionally, there is also a need for increased investment in research into methods to extend their shelf life so that they can be stored longer without spoiling or becoming stale.
The two main players in the Indonesia onion and shallot market are PT Harapan Sari Sukses (HSS) and PT Gading Mas Sejahtera (GMS). HSS is one of Indonesia largest producers with over 10 hectares of land dedicated solely to growing onions while GMS specializes primarily in supplying large quantities at wholesale prices both domestically within Indonesia and internationally through export channels. Other key players include several smaller companies such as Yudha Kreasi Sejati who specialize mainly in producing specialty types such as yellow onions or baby shallots for home use or restaurants/supermarkets/wholesalers throughout Southeast Asia.
