VR headset market reaches $3.4 million in India

NEW DELHI: India's virtual reality headset market has begun taking baby steps.

Virtual reality or VR headset shipments have reached over $3.4 million in value terms, in the January-March quarter this year, with players like ANTVR and DOMO capturing more than 85% of the market.

According to data by 6Wresearch, more than 11 vendors shipped virtual headsets in India including Google, Shinecon, Colorcross, and Casemate. The research also found that headsets having a 100-degree field of view captured majority share.

"Increasing demand for virtual reality technology among mobile users, the introduction of entry-level VR headsets in the market, and effective marketing from smartphone manufacturers have boosted India's virtual reality market," said Anuj Mehrotra, senior research analyst at 6Wresearch-India Electronics Division.

Increasing application segments such as healthcare, industrial, education, and retail and marketing, have further boosted the demand for VR headsets in the country, she added.

VR headset market in India has witnessed several key partnerships and alliances among smartphone and VR headset manufacturers which in turn have created a perfect gateway for entry-level devices in the country.

Lenovo, for instance, is offering ANTVR headset with its mid-range K4 Note Smartphone representing a unique selling proposition in the market.

However, research also pointed to the lack of virtual reality content and little consumer awareness, as a major hurdle for the growth of this segment in the country, even as smartphones witness far larger growth rates.
